ALT Tampa
St. Petersburg Photo Laureate, 2026
Below is a sample of the photography book I assembled for the series ALT Tampa. In this series, Tampa-based photographer Jesi Cason creates tributes and urges the preservation of the alt community. Her portraits honor individuals who insist on visibility, complexity, and self-invention. Learn more!
Creating this photo book for my friend was extemely fun and gratifying. I love working with people who aren’t afraid of color, strangeness, or whimsy. Luckily this embodied all three!
Like the alt community, I wanted this book to be offset. I wanted bold fonts and weird typography choices. Big contrast to compliment Jesi’s amazing portraits. Many of the pages and quotes have different orientations, inviting readers to interact with the book by turning it upside down or pulling it apart. Similarly, in my own little alt community of Southwest Florida, you have to dig deep to find the cool scene instead of following the perfectly gentrified path.
Voila! The photobooks were freshly printed just in time to be featured at the exhibition’s opening night. Below are a few photos of the exhibition, my friends and I made the trip to Ybor City to see it in all its glory.
