Support the Arts

Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center

During my time working at the SBDAC, I curated a campaign to refresh their support materials. You can donate to the center, volunteer for events, sponsor an event, or become a member and recieve great reciprocal benefits. The SBDAC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that depends on community support and seasonal visitors.

Using the center’s existing branding, I wanted to create a way to say “support the arts” that was harmonious but allowed for more expression. The SBDAC logo is an interesting antique font and a dark red column capital motif, which already appeared on each piece of their marketing. So I could usually have some creative fun with their marketing designs. The lovely capital heart swirl was a part of prior support materials, and I used it in the expansion. I wanted to incorporate some textures where effective. The coral rock is beautiful and it’s what the center is made of!

The SBDAC provides four main categories of support, including volunteering, sponsorship, donation, and membership. To visually represent these avenues in a way that resonates with our clientele, I designed these small icons, using a brighter shade of the brand’s red.

With the preliminary design elements established, I developed several small pieces of print marketing to enhance our membership efforts. My co-director at the time proposed highlighting the benefits of our Partner level membership, which included a discounted ticket for the Van Gogh Alive Experience. Additionally, I created a tri-fold brochure to inform patrons about our support avenues, which featured a membership form that could be completed and mailed back to us.

The art center sometimes had difficulty in attracting patrons, as they often felt intimidated by the building’s architecture. However, the art center also has a range of marketing opportunities. For example, we were able to adorn several of the front doors with eye-catching mesh signs to promote curiosity and create a welcoming atmosphere.

In another instance, the center had the ability to hang seven 8 foot by 9 foot banners between its beautiful columns. These large banners can be seen even from a block away! Though it never came to pass for lack of space, I designed a banner for the support campaign as well.
